Macules are the first type of acne scar. These are typically red flat spots that appear where the acne lesion was. These can worse over a period of time, or they may disappear on their own. It’s different for every person. Skin discoloration is common in most people. This can be referred to as hyper-pigmentation or post-inflammatory disease. When you see dips in the skin you are dealing with loss of tissue. These can be called follicule macular atrophy, ice-pick scars, or depressed fibrotic scars. Lastly, there are simple tissue scars. This is where raised skin growths appear on the facial skin due to an excess production of collagen. These are also called hypertrophic scars or keloids.
